Bernie Sachs Meet the Author and Book Signing

The stories of Baltimore’s colorful short (and not so short) streetcar lines (i.e.‘jerkwaters’) which served milltowns such as Dickeyville, Woodberry, Owings Mills and Ellicott City, obscure (and not so obscure) growing suburbs such as Lutherville, Idlewylde, and Halethorpe, densely settled industrial/residential neighborhoods such as Orangeville, Canton, Highlandtown, and Curtis Bay, and the rural-like streetcar lines which extended along the Patapsco Neck to such shoreline destinations as Back River, Bay Shore, Fort Howard, and River View. The Book is 257 pages long, thoroughly researched, and with almost 300 pictures, maps, and illustrations, many in color. Many of the stories illustrate the operation of important streetcars in BSM’s collection on various jerkwaters, especially #s4533, 1164, 264, 417, 1050, and 2324.

Weather and availability permitting, Mr. Sachs hopes to operate one or two of these cars for the attendees, and elaborate some of the vignettes about their use on the ‘jerkwaters’. If you already have a copy of the book, come anyway, and Mr. Sachs will sign your personal copy!

Dedication of Baltimore Traction Car 554

One of BSM's oldest streetcars - a circa 1896 (yes - 1896) single-truck open summer streetcar has undergone a massive top-to-bottom restoration that has brought the car back to virtually new condition. It was purchased by the Baltimore Traction Company in 1896 and represents literally the very first generation of electric streetcars in Baltimore. It is a beautiful car that was lovingly restored by BSM's talented and dedicated restoration department, led by Mr. Dave Wilson and Mr. Charles "Buster" Hughes - with help from many others. We will have a dedication ceremony, refreshments and of course several rides on this wonderful car! Come join us!
